Urban FIRE Business Class – Training for the Gig Economy (Oakland)
April 15 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Are you a freelancer? Self-Employed? Do you drive for Uber or Lyft? Need support operating your business? Take our Business Class in Oakland!
The Gig Economy is challenging our traditional ways of work with demands that few of us understand.
To equip our Oakland and East Bay residents with the skills essential to thrive in the Gig Economy, Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center will host the Urban FIRE program, Oakland’s own entrepreneurship training since 1998, and will offer a new version that‘s tailored to those who need to learn the requirements of the new workplace as well as those exploring the opportunities for independent self-employment and small business startups. This will be the only time Urban FIRE is offered in 2017.
There has never been a time in our history where the lessons of entrepreneurship can be so universally applied because the Gig Economy is essentially an entrepreneurial environment whether you work for an employer or work for yourself. In fact, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected that by 2020, at least 40 percent of working Americans will be their own bosses either by choice or situation. The Freelancers Union of New York, projects this figure to exceed 60 percent.
Urban FIRE’s goal is in training students to find opportunities regardless of economic conditions and to gain the practical skills that can take a concept to reality – something that Gig employers are in dire need for – and to do so as an employee, contractor or a vendor operating your own business.
As usual, Urban FIRE is using the training methods with the highest retention rate including visual, interactive and group participation. It is a lively three-hour weekly program that has gained national recognition, imitation and won the National Excellence Award for urban economic development.
- Urban FIRE begins Saturday, April 15, 9am to 12pm for 16 weeks. Tuition is on a sliding scale based on your 2016 income. No one will be turned away.
