Abraham Lopez made a promise to his 10-year old son Johny in 2007, “Someday, we’re going to open an electronics business.” For an immigrant from Yucatan, Mexico, with little English language skills, no technical skills or money, it was a tall order.

In May of 2013, after receiving training and advising at Renaissance Marin, Abraham fulfilled his promise by opening YucaTech Technology Solutions — a dedicated, customer-focused electronics service business on Fourth Street in San Rafael. He also gave Johny, who works alongside him, an opportunity to learn the technical skills and ropes of running a business.

Abraham arrived in the United States in 1998, coming directly to San Rafael. His first job was washing dishes at Joe’s Taco Lounge in Mill Valley. But through his willingness to learn and hard work, he moved from busboy, to waiter, to supervisor at Rickey’s Restaurant in Novato. In his spare time, he studied hard to master English, earned his GED and took courses to get an Associate’s Degree in Computer Information Systems at College of Marin. With all this new knowledge, he started repairing electronics for his neighboring friends and family.

In 2012, Abraham discovered EARN, a nonprofit organization helping low-wage workers to build lifelong saving habits and financial capability. Through EARN, Abraham opened an Individual Development Account (IDA) that matched 2:1 up to $4000. But in order to receive the match, Abraham needed a business plan. This is when EARN referred Abraham to Renaissance Marin.

Renaissance and EARN have an ongoing collaboration to help EARN members with developing and reviewing business plans. As Abraham saw the importance of gaining more business knowledge, he enrolled in Renaissance’s small business class and received one-on-one advising through the Renaissance-hosted Marin SBDC (Small Business Development Center) to finalize his plan.

“Renaissance is a pillar in the community! Renaissance creates a type of motivation and support that propels you to continue forward,” says Abraham. “They give you answers to questions that you may not have thought of. They gave me confidence to succeed, inspiring me to become one of their success stories!”

Renaissance was honored to present Abraham with our 2014 Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year award. In 2015 Abraham received Faces of Entrepreneurship Award from California Association for Micro Enterprise Opportunity (CAMEO).
